Voter ID photo size for Form 6: what the Election Commission actually asks for
The photo rules from the ECI's own form guidelines, how they apply when you apply online, and why the KB limits you see on other websites aren't official.

Contents
For a voter ID card (EPIC), the Election Commission of India asks for a recent, good quality passport size colour photograph of 4.5×3.5 cm with a white background. It must be unsigned, your eyes must be open and both edges of your face must be clearly visible. That's the rule for a new voter on Form 6, and the same rule applies on Form 8 if you want to change the photo on an existing card. The ECI's guidelines don't set a KB limit, so when applying online, go by the upload screen. You can make the photo online from a good selfie in SelfieDoc: the service fits the size, background and head position to the requirements.

What the Form 6 guidelines say about the photo
The guidelines appended to Form 6, the application for new voters, have one paragraph on the photo, marked as mandatory. Put simply:
- Recent and good quality. A sharp, well-lit picture of how you look now.
- Passport size: 4.5×3.5 cm. As on standard passport-size prints, that's 4.5 cm high and 3.5 cm wide.
- Colour, white background. No blue, grey or patterned backgrounds.
- Unsigned. Don't sign across it.
- Eyes open, both edges of the face visible. Hair or a dupatta shouldn't hide the sides of the face.
That's all the ECI specifies. There are no separate rules in these guidelines on glasses, expression or head size. Use common sense: face the camera squarely, keep a neutral expression and avoid glare on glasses.
Applying online: is there a KB limit?
The ECI's form guidelines don't give one. You can apply on the Voters' Service Portal or the Voter Helpline app; follow the formats and size the upload screen accepts.
Many websites quote 20 KB, 50 KB or 200 KB as "the voter ID photo size in KB". None of these numbers appear in the ECI guidelines we checked, and they contradict each other. A sensible approach:
- Prepare a 4.5×3.5 cm photo with the face filling most of the frame.
- Save it as a JPG at a moderate quality.
- If the portal rejects it, compress it to the limit shown on screen. Don't shrink it so much that the face turns blurry: the photo is printed on your card.
Voter ID photo size in pixels
The ECI doesn't give pixels either. If you need a number for a photo editor, 3.5×4.5 cm at 300 dpi is about 413×531 pixels (cm ÷ 2.54 × 300). The shape matters more than the exact count: keep the 7:9 rectangle so the portal doesn't crop your head.
Changing your voter ID photo: Form 8
If your card has an old or poor photo, apply on Form 8. Its guidelines say that to change the photograph, you paste a recent good quality passport size unsigned colour photo of 4.5×3.5 cm with a white background in the box meant for it. In other words, exactly the same photo as for Form 6.
Indians living abroad: Form 6A
Citizens living abroad who hold an Indian passport register as overseas electors on Form 6A. Its guidelines are slightly softer: one recent passport size colour photograph with a light background, preferably white, showing the full face. A white background still works for both forms.
Common voter ID photo mistakes
- Signing across the photo. Habit from the PAN form. The voter ID photo must stay unsigned.
- A square 2×2 inch photo. It doesn't fit the 4.5×3.5 cm box, and cutting it down often loses the chin or the top of the hair.
- A cut-out from a group or family picture. The result is usually blurry and the background isn't white.
- Edges of the face hidden by hair, a scarf or a turned head.
- An old photo. The guidelines ask for a recent one.
- Over-compressing the file to meet a KB limit seen on another website.
How to make a voter ID photo
At a photo studio. Ask for a 4.5×3.5 cm colour print on a white background, plus a JPG if you're applying online. One set of studio photos usually covers Form 6 and other forms with the same size.
At home. Stand in front of a plain white wall, face a window in daylight and ask someone to take the photo at eye level. Crop to head and shoulders in a 7:9 rectangle.
Online from a selfie. SelfieDoc crops the photo to 4.5×3.5 cm, places the head and checks size and background, and gives you a file for the online form and a sheet for printing. Your facial features stay as they are.
Other Indian forms use different sizes: compare them in our passport size photo dimensions guide. If you're applying for a PAN at the same time, note that its upload is smaller: see PAN card photo size.
